The Whore Of Salford

I guess by now most of you have read about Sufiah The Whore. I think it's a shame, she's got brains to make it big but then probably too much was expected of her too soon so she just broke. Not that it's any excuse to make a living by selling herself like that. Dignity is something wholely removed from hardship and such, IMHO. A poorman with dignity would work crappy jobs rather than beg, which is easier and (I think) provides more money. Why can't she just start working like normal people do, is the lure of dirty money too good to resist?

Anyway, today I read something even more apalling in the papers. Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi launched a campaign spearheaded by Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim called 'Selamatkan Sufiah' or Save Sufiah. Read his quotes, which I requote from Utusan Malaysia:

"Kita kasihan. Sufiah gadis bijak. Kita akan bincang cara menyelesaikan isu ini secepat mungkin"

"Kita mahu Sufiah dibela. Kita akan fikir caranya. Membawa pulang atau mencari dana menyara pembelajarannya"

"Kita tidak mahu kehidupannya terus dibelenggu dosa. Apa yang terjadi kepada Sufiah sepatutnya boleh dielakkan"

Sure, noble intent. But how come noble intents only come forth during a high profile case like this? She's not a Malaysian by nationality, and she's only half Malaysian by blood. Forget Rukun Negara, I don't think she even know Negaraku. Why is it that we're going to spend time and money (and I bet copious amounts of both, and all Malaysian) for this effort exactly? It's just for the publicity isn't it? We have hundreds or maybe thousands of 100% Malaysians who are in a similar predicament, plying their trade in dingy motel rooms and back alleys. Just because they're not accepted to Oxford at 13 does not mean they're not worthy of attention. Most of them did not have a choice, forced by necessity and circumstance. Sufiah chose to do what she is doing, no one is pimping her off nor is she starving under a bridge somewhere. For all I know, she might actually be happy doing what she is doing now.

Please, help our own first. Stop this foolish publicity game. We've been wasting too much money, time and energy towards ego masturbation (Angkasawan, anyone?), while many more citizens could do with some help here and now. Datuk, you enrage me.

I think its unfair to judge her actions and preach about the importance of retaining one's dignity without fully knowing or understanding the context of her situation and going through the same experiences as she did. Its so easy to claim that in a desperate situation one would act in a much more dignified manner then when actually faced by such desperation in reality. Besides, it doesn't seem like she actually went looking for the publicity, nor did she ask for the public aide.

pickholes: ditto

khaylis: fair point, though i still think it's not an excuse when u have a choice.

abt publicity and aide, i am not condemning her. i am condemning the govt for using her as a PR exercise. she's selling herself is one issue, and the govt taking advantage of the situation is another issue altogether.

bila masa pulak gov. abaikn pelacur arr?, ni mesti buta fakta, malas nk libat diri ngn sukarelawan, bape kali ko masuk keluar pengasih? bantu org sana?, bape kali ko masuk rumah perlindungan wanita?, ape tk tgk 999 berlori2 pelacur diangkat..
at least mashitah tu bantula sikit,
kalu korang nk bangkang, pegila buat petisyen, kumpul dalm 10 tandangan, no . IC, nama penuh, alamat, no. tefon, hantar kt mashitah tu n said.. WTF your doing????///
ada berani nk bangkang?, ke takde telur?

aku cabarla korang kalu bukan pengecut...

hani: thanks, do drop by again!

kambingeor: don't you know how to read? i am asking them to do more for the prostitutes in our own back alleys, rather than waste money on one person whose not even one of us. there's better ways to spend that money on, like giving more to women's shelter and such. please learn to read carefully first before bursting out like this ok? =)

kambingeor is stupid. Well if she or he so supporting the campaign, I suggest the bigger portion of the donation should come from he/she. There's no way money frm ordinary malaysians should come to british citizen. In fact it should be the other way around considering we are a third world country.

sufiah is probably happy with her life right now. we never know.

she probably doesn't want to be saved. with that brain of hers, i'm sure she fully knows what she's doing and the consequences. or maybe she doesn't know the consequences but knows enough to do it anyway.

i know it's probably unsavoury, but we don't know her intentions and frankly speaking, we don't know her at all, so maybe we should not judge her actions.

a smart girl like her, she'll find the light when she wants to. maybe she's one of those people who need to fall real hard before soaring again.

my 2 sen.

anon: i think it's plain wrong that they should be using malaysian taxpayer's money on a fool's errand like this. i'm sure there's plenty more birdges to be built, or schools that need better facilities.

nurulazreen: exactly. since she's not forced to do it, that is probably the career of her choice. just let her be, if she needs help she can ask for it. adults should learn to be responsible for their actions, unless if they have no choice.

i'm not writing her off though, she might someday be a better person than all of us. i'm just disappointed with all this PR shebang, that's all. the ministers should really start reading blogs, as it seems like i'm not the only one whose not happy about this campaign...

kambing u r missing the point. sufiah is after all non-malaysian. point is why bother cleaning up another neighbourhood's road when we have trash in our backyard?

comprende?

imagine the amount the government would spend to "save" her. dalam pound sterlings plak tuh. kalau buat ops bersih kat lorong haji taib tu lagi berbaloi dan berkesan sebab ramai lagi rakyat malaysia kat situ.

kalau kat malaysia ni memang takde sorang pon pelacur, then baru la make sense kita nak tolong 1/2 malaysians pulak.

step-by-step cleaning process lah.. ntah2 sufiah tak nak pon ditolong for all we know.. pergi UK free aje..

sure menteri2 tu syok gi sana sebab dapat pergi shopping kat london for free.

haih, pembaziran..

i dont think it's wrong to help sufiah.. looking at a muslim's POV, she's practically a sister..

but i do think it's wrong to do it as a PR exercise..

aida: exactly.

Well said, the banker.

Although it's a noble act, it's a waste of money and time. like miss aida already said, let her be. plus, we can't change people, can we?

kurthaz said...

Here's my POV.

These people are selling the "we care about you sufiah" idea but as a matter of fact, they just care about the "weahoo! we're going for a fully sponsored trip to UK!" idea.

The Banker said...

aishah rozi: yup, since she's an adult herself, she can damn well think for herself can't she?

kurthaz: exactly.
